Last week was Shakespeare-mania, as we both held a schoolwide Shakespeare Festival, and took a group of forty or so students downtown for the Denver Festival, a huge event now in its 35th year. The students have been practicing their lines since late February or early March -- each class took on a different play, some learning select scenes, others working on abridged versions of a whole play. (We did King Lear -- I double-cast the play and we performed it twice. My two Lears are above.) Even the kindergarteners got involved, doing "greatest hits" -- famous Shakespearean one-liners. The school festival was a big success, with three stages showcasing the plays, scenes, and some Renaissance dances, plus booths run by parent volunteers selling peacock feathers, juggling bags, and beads, all for under a dollar. It was a lot of fun. The downtown trip went well, too, although it was a long day, and HOT. Downtown we were only allowed to do scenes, so we picked out some of our favorite. The judges were impressed at how well the kids all knew their parts and their characters. I was proud of them all. (Also, I left my terrible threesome at school!) Even with five chaperones, it was a busy day, lots of running around and making sure people got to the stage on time. I was pretty happy to be home with a glass of wine when it was all over!
Nine more days of school........and A starts his new job Thursday.
