Finding the rhythm

It's been kind of a hectic two weeks back from break -- writing sub plans for the first day of school, long weekend ski trip with the in-laws, meeting and working with my new student teacher, all-day training on the new science curriculum today -- but I'm starting to feel like I remember how it all works. My life, I mean. My normal, not-on-vacation, daily life. A did laundry and grocery shopping while I was at my training, I got some papers graded when I got home, I have a rough plan for what I'll teach next week...it feels good to know what's happening more than an hour ahead!

I really enjoyed working with my student teacher this week, although it feels a little strange to be given the responsibility for teaching another adult how to teach. What knowledge have I accumulated that makes me so special? Half the time I feel like I'm still faking it! Anyway, she seems highly competent, which is good, as I will have to worry less both about being a role model and about the quality of instruction my students will be getting. It will be interesting to see how well I do with relinquishing my claim on the classroom when she takes over full-time next month for three weeks. I'm starting to think that a lot of us go into teaching because it gives us a chance to run the show...but I am going to try not to be too possessive. In the meantime, it's been great having another adult in the room, just one more person to bounce ideas off of, to trade problem children with ("no, really, you can deal with Tian today"), and to watch the students while I run to the bathroom! And although I've been spending more time than usual after school this week because of it, talking out the day and planning the weeks ahead, I think in the long run it will be a huge help, and save me a lot of stress and energy.  Maybe I can even call in sick some day and let her run the show....

Oh, and Little Miss Sunshine has definitely made it into my top ten.  Hilarious.
