Crawl for the Cure
We woke up early this morning and caught a bus downtown for the annual Race for the Cure, a run/walk to raise money for and awareness of breast cancer. The Denver Race is either the largest or second-largest Race in the country, depending on who you ask, and this year there were over sixty thousand people running or walking. I walked. Although the streets were so jammed, at times it was difficult even to do that! It's a pretty powerful feeling to be surrounded by that many people supporting the same cause -- at one point, I could see both ahead and behind for almost a mile, and there was no pavement visible. Just a sea of pink! Pink hats, pink boas, pink shirts and shorts and even shoes. Pink crowns and pompom headbands. The people-watching is great. I heard that they raised over $3 million this weekend, when you combine the Race for the Cure with all the associated events: Sleep In for the Cure, Workout for the Cure, and K9s for the Cure (a dog walking event). Yes, those are all official events. I think they even come with t-shirts. Although who would want to announce to the world that they are a lazy ass by wearing a Sleep In shirt? What is next, a Send Money for the Cure shirt?
